2015

SEPTEMBER

Elementary School

Congratulations to Carson Brewer on being selected as the elementary school physical education students of the month. Carson is a joy to have in class.  I truly admire his physical skills and efforts he displays each and every class.  Even when he was forced to have a cast and wear a boot on his foot/leg, he wasn’t slowed down!  When Carson is in class, he instantly energizes his peers and encourages them to play hard.  I look forward to teaching Carson these next few years in physical education and am excited to cheer him on in future athletics as an Albany Comet!

KITCHEN DELIsh

STRAWBERRY BANANA POPSICLE

Healthy strawberry banana popsicle made with only 3 ingredients. Beat the heat with this skinny treat this September!

Yield: 6 popsicles

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 8 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients:

1 large ripe banana; peeled, cut into chunks & frozen

12 large strawberries; sliced

1/2 cup pineapple juice (or orange juice)

Directions:

1. Blend all of the ingredients together on high speed until smooth - about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed as you go.

2. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds. If your popsicle mold has slots for sticks, you can insert them before freezing - if not, freeze for 2 hours, then put a wooden popsicle stick in the middle (that is what I did). Continue to freeze for an additional 6 hours or overnight - overnight is recommended for easy removal.

3. Run popsicle molds under hot water to remove easily.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Eating fruits and vegetables may help the human body make its own aspirin.

  • Using a food diary can double a persons weight-loss efforts.

  • Walking against the wind, in the water, or while wearing a backpack burns about 50 more calories per hour than walking with no resistance. People who wear pedometers also tend to burn more calories and lose more weight.

  • Smokers are four times as likely to report feeling unrested after a nights sleep than nonsmokers, and are 70% more likely to develop hearing loss.

REVAMPED WEIGHT ROOM

This summer our weight room received a make over. The updated weight room features a new open floor scheme that more closely resembles an actual fitness center. A new albany paint scheme has been added to the walls to really make the place pop! Some additions to the weight room include: pull-up bar, universal ball/band rack, bumper plates, and interval timer. The only thing missing is a platform that will be built sometime this school year. I want to thank everyone who was involved in making this a success!

NEW FUEL UP TO PLAY 60

PLAYER REPRESENATIVE

We are excited to announce that Green Bay Packers' safety Morgan Burnett will be your new spokesperson for Wisconsin Fuel Up to Play 60. Please help us in welcoming Morgan to the FUTP60 team!

A little about Morgan Burnett:

Morgan is 26 years old born in Tennessee. Played high school ball in Georgia and then took his talents to Georgia Tech for his college career. Burnett lead his team in interceptions his freshman year and earned Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Freshman team and accumulated multiple All-American honors. Burnett forwent his senior year and was drafted by the Packers in the 2010 NFL draft. Morgan looks to solidify this year's defense as he is projected to start at strong safety.

NFL FUEL UP TO PLAY 60

2015-2016 PLAYS

This school year will be the second year that we've been an active NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 school. To kickoff our 2015-2016 campaign, on September 14 and September 15, our students will go through a football-oriented obstacle course that will include a Lambeau Leap!

We also have two NEW plays that we plan to incorporate this school year. Our healthy eating play will be a smoothie taste test during advisory period in the coming months. In November, we are also going to put on a Family Training Camp night where students can bring in their families and complete multiple football-oriented stations to test their football skills!

COMETS ON THE MOVE!!!

A day at lambeau

Thanks to the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board for inviting us to the 2nd Annual NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 Day at Lambeau! The guest appearances of Mark Murphy and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila "KGB" started the day discussing the importance of the NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 program and the positive impact it has on our youth today. The stadium tour at the end of the day was an awesome experience!

Notes:

Taste the mixture before freezing. If you prefer the popsicles to be sweeter, you may add a bit of honey. If your strawberries and banana are ripe, you shouldn't need additional sweetener.
