OCTOBER

Elementary School

Congratulations to Alana Durtschi on being selected as the elementary school physical education student of the month. Alana amazes me every single day. Her positive outlook truly makes her an enjoyable person to be around.  In the physical education setting, Alana is competitive in a positive way. She always gives 100% in every task she is given, wants to succeed, and helps her peers and/or team to succeed by offering them specific encouragement. Alana accepts new challenges and uses defeat only to make her want to try harder next time. I’m excited to watch Alana continue to grow into a successful student athlete here in Albany.

nfl punt, pass, & kick

On September 20th, Albany hosted a local NFL PUNT, PASS & KICK competition at the school playground field. NFL PPK is a program developed to aid in teaching the fundamentals of punting, passing, and kicking a football, as well as the teamwork and attitude needed to successfully play sports. Girls and boys in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) compete against each other in a fun and engaging way.

Albany had 51 student participants in the local competition.  It was a very entertaining morning as family members and friends were able to enjoy beautiful weather and music, while watching the participants have fun being active. The top finisher in each of the boys’ and girls’ divisions from the five age brackets will advance to compete at the sectional round, which will be held at Middleton High School in Middleton, Wisconsin on October 25th at 11:00 a.m.

Thank you to the NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 Albany student team for volunteering to help work the event!  Good luck to the 10 Albany participants at sectionals!

KITCHEN DELIsh

QUICK AND EASY SWEET POTATO BISCUITS

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup flour *see notes

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter,         cut into cubes

  • 3/4 cup cooked mashed sweet potato (about 1 medium potato)

  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup milk, as needed

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a baking mat.

2. In a medium mixing bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Use a wix to combine.

3. Add the butter and then using a fork, pastry blender, or your fingers, work the butter mixture into the flour mixture until it is the size of small peas. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

4. Add the sweet potato puree and 1/3 cup of milk to the flower mixture and stir to combine. If the mixture is crumbly and not sticking together add the rest of the milk 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.

5. Remove the dough onto a  flour dusted surface and dust the top with a little more flour. Roll the dough so that it is 3/4 of an inch thick. Cut the dough using a knife or a biscuit butter into 9 pieces.

6. Place the biscuits on the baking sheet and into the oven. Bake until the tops are light golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Tobacco nearly kils 6 million people each year; more than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Unless urgent action is taken, the annual death toll could rise to more than 8 million by 2030.

  • Nearly 3,500 people die from road traffic crashes every day; Road traffic injuries are projected to rise as vehicle ownership increases due to economic growth in developing countries. Strong action to improve road-use policies and enforce road-safety is needed to avert this rise in injuries and deaths.

  • It might only take you a few minutes to finish a meal but it takes your body around 12 hours to completely digest the food.

October is breast cancer awareness month

This is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!

COMETS ON THE MOVE!!!

KICKOFF EVENT

Program advisors and student team members helped Albany Schools kickoff our NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 program by creating and leading all students in a football themed obstacle course, which included a Lambeau leap! They also set up a station for students to take a milk mustache photo. Student team members discussed with students the importance of being active and making healthy food choices.

Notes:

You can use all-purpose flour, a mixture of half all purpose flour and half whole wheat or all whole wheat flour. If you are going to use 100% whole wheat flour I highly recommend buying whole wheat pastry flour. This flour is very finely ground from soft white wheat berries unlike traditional whole wheat flour that is ground from hard red wheat berries. The whole wheat pastry flour yields to a much softer and fluffier biscuit. You can use traditional whole wheat flour but your biscuits may turn out dense and thick (not typically the goal for a delicious biscuit.
