MARCH

ALBANY STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Middle School

Congratulations to Kaleigh Dallman on being recognized as the middle school physical education student of the month.  It's been an awesome two years that i've had the joy of having Kaleigh as a student. She always gives her best effort in any of the activities that we do in class.  She has a very likeable personality and many times she can be seen having a big smile on her face.  She is a three sport athlete and also plays an important role in our band here at Albany.  I look forward to teaching Kaleigh in the future and see where her athletic talent takes her in making her mark here in Albany.

Congratulations to Jordin Stodola on being recognized as the high school physical education student of the month. Jordin...Well Jordin LOVES basketball. Nearly every day of class Jordin will show up early and ask to shoot around as we wait for others to arrive.  For Jordin, basketball is an escape.  For those minutes or hours that he plays, he can forget what else is going on in his life and can truly enjoy and have fun playing ball. Jordin is also one of the more respectful students i've had in class this year. I've seen great improvement from Jordin and I am excited to watch Jordin grow right here in Albany.

FITNESSGRAM RECORD BOARD

October was fitness testing month for Albany students in grades 3 through 12. Most students have completed the fall FITNESSGRAM.

FITNESSGRAM is a comprehensive health-related fitness assessment. It includes a variety of health related physical fitness tests designed to assess cardiovascular fitness (aerobic capacity), muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.   The fitness items are scored using criterion-referenced standards.  These standards are age and gender specific and are established based on how fit children need to be for good health.  Through the use of these standards, a “healthy fitness zone” is created. Students completed the mile, pacer, curl-up, push-up, sit & reach, trunk lift, height, weight, & percent body fat assessments.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Your heart is the strongest and most important muscle in your body. Your heart is sort of like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite:  It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body.

  • A can of soda can have about 8 teaspoons of sugar. In one year, most people drink enough soda or sugary drinks to fill a bathtub with sugar.

  • For every hour you exercise you may gain 2 hours of life expectancy. That's a pretty good two-for-one offer!

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

K - 6th grade students have kicked off Jump Rope For Heart!  Being a part of this community service learning program is an excellent way to remind our students the importance of developing heart-healthy habits, that being physically active can be fun, and teaches students that raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community.

Your son or daughter is becoming a Heart Hero by taking care of his or her own heart, spreading the message of the American Heart Association, and raising funds for lifesaving research.  If you haven't already, please register for our school team at heart.org/jump or by searching "Jump/Hoops" in the app store.  All donations raised will be due on our EVENT DAY (Friday, March 18th) when we celebrate and have fun!

ELEMENTARY School

Congratulations to Owen Douglas on being recognized as the elementary school physical education student of the month. Owen has a huge interest in sports and understands that staying fit helps him to be more sucessful in the sports he loves to play.  He is extremely competitive and this year he has really shown how to use his competitive streak in a postive way.  I always know that when Owen comes to physical education class, he will give me 100% effort and leave the gym sweaty!  He uses his energy in a positive way to give his heart and muscles a workout.  I'm extremely excited to watch Owen utilitize his skills  and energy as he competes in athletics in future years.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 425F.

  2. In a large bowl whisk together the olive oil, tomato paste and dijon mustard. Note that the olive oil will not fully incorporate. That's okay.

  3. Add 1/4 cup of the parmesan cheese, the oregano, garlic poweder, salt and pepper.

  4. Break a head of cauliflower into florets and add them to the tomato paste mixture. Stir using a spatula to make sure the sauce is getting onto the cauliflower, which should end up stained red. Use the spatula to transfer all the cauliflower and sauce to a large bakings heet.

  5. Roast until darkened in spots and is tender-crisp when stuck with a fork, 20-25 minutes. Stir gently with a metal spatula and, if desired, sprinkle with more parmesan cheese to serve.

*If you like your cauliflower more tender, roast at a lower temperature for longer (e.g., 375F for 35 minutes).
